Jasper to Banff: A Shaky Start

I’m not a beginner outdoors anymore. I’ve walked almost ten thousand miles. I’ve spent well over ten thousand hours outside and lost count of the number of nights spent under the stars. Most people would probably consider me an expert backpacker. So why on earth would I start back at the beginning, a complete newbie, with no knowledge? Well, it seems like fun. So Steve and I decide to ride our bikes for five thousand kilometres, with only my old school bike commuting in Alaska and two local 50k bike packing trips for experience.

Keith and Leslie are as amazing as always, taking us in, feeding us and teaching us how to fix our bikes. Leslie rides around town with us, from breakfast spot to lunch spot to pretty views over the river. We spend our day off eating and people watching, and doing all the chores that come with being in town.

It’s an easy five km to the border. The guard waves us across, letting us stop for water at their bathrooms. Then another twenty km to Eureka on easy paved roads. We make it in time for breakfast.
